10: Precautions going outside – When you eat out, what should you look out for?

Q: What do I need to pay attention to if I have to eat out?

πŸ’Tracy: If you have to eat out, please pay attention to the following:

  • Choose a restaurant with good sanitary conditions.
  • Try your best to avoid buffet or cafeterias. Especially, avoid getting food that has been exposed to air or uncovered for a long time.

  • Don’t go to restaurants at peak times. Avoid crowded restaurants.
  • If possible, choose restaurants that provide online ordering, which means you can order at table but there’s no need to communicate with the waiters/waitresses.

  • Try your best to get your meals to-go. Disinfect the bag and food container. Before eating, heat up food again, please refer to food disinfection recommendations.

  • Don’t order meat, eggs, or dairy that is not fully cooked. This includes partially cooked steak, eggs, etc.

  • Wash your hands and disinfect your utensils before eating or drinking.

  • Try your best not to eat in group settings. Minimize your time at the restaurant.
  • If you must eat with other people, minimize the number of people you eat with. Everyone should eat solely from their own plate; don’t eat family-style. Don’t use utensils that other people have touched.
  • In order to avoid contamination, don’t put your phone on the table.
  • Eat faster, don’t go on your phone, and don’t chit-chat.

  • In restaurants, avoid touching public surfaces. These include tables, chairs, menus, etc. If you touch a public surface, wash and disinfect your hands before eating.

Restaurant owners
Restaurant owners should pay attention to the following:

  1. Keep the restaurant well-ventilated, keep tables outside if possible.
  2. Limit the number of restaurant employees and customers present at any time. Practice social distancing if multiple people come.
  3. Provide employees with disposable gloves, masks, and other protective equipment. Additionally, train them in sanitary practices.
  4. Disinfect the entire restaurant multiple times every day, including the dining area and kitchen area.
  5. The restaurant should provide disinfectant and disinfecting wipes. Bathrooms should have hand soap, disinfectant, and disinfecting wipes.
  6. Please follow your local public health department’s prevention guidelines.
